Rehearsals Photography
I always understood the theatre photographer to be one more in the team. Drama is a collective task; we all work together to bring a story alive. The director, the actors, the set and costume designers, the sound and light department, they all work together for the same thing: the show.
It is therefore essential that the photographer assists the rehearsals, not only to document the advances and provide some publicity shots, but also as a part of the development.
If the job is properly done, the camera has an advantageous point to ‘frame’ and extract key moments that may not be visible to the naked eye. Rehearsal photography can provide great resources to the director and the team to evaluate what is working and what needs more work; it can also give ideas and motivate to improve an scene. Ah, the importance of theatre rehearsal photography!
